Why Support Us?

The work of the Alliance is funded by contributions from utilities, companies, and individuals who recognize the importance of energy efficiency as an effective strategy to address global warming and reduce pollution. The Alliance is able to maximize results by leveraging our broad technical and financial network, while keeping administrative costs to a minimum.

Our work is unique in that we are being invited by the Chinese authorities to help them understand how to develop and implement energy efficiency (DSM) programs (and thus help them achieve their ambitious efficiency goals). In fact, our first pilot project in Jiangsu province has proven so successful that the Chinese government has asked us to expand our efforts to two additional provinces, as well as to Shanghai and Beijing.

In terms of quantifiable results, our work in Jiangsu Province has thus far resulted in a savings of about 2 billion kWh of electricity annually and reduced CO2 emissions by 1.84 million tons. As a result of this activity, Jiangsu Province surpassed China’s energy intensity reduction goal for 2007 (achieving a 4.28% reduction). This achievement was praised by the Prime Minister and Jiangsu’s efforts were recommended by the State Council as a model for all of China.

With additional funding, the Alliance can help ensure that Jiangsu’s strategic blueprint is implemented, meaning that by 2015 they will save the equivalent of 26 large coal-fired power plants. Implementing the entire portfolio designed by us for Jiangsu would reduce total coal consumption by 167 million metric tons in 2015, eliminating 613 and 8.6 million metric tons of carbon and sulfur dioxide emissions, respectively.

Our goal is to work with other provinces and with central authorities, in order to replicate throughout China our success in improving energy efficiency and reducing the projected need for coal-fired plants.

In addition to stemming the growth in traditional sources of power (e.g., coal-fired plants and large-scale dams), improved energy efficiency in China will have a number of important benefits. For example:

Reducing pollution in California and around the world. China’s coal-fired plants are a significant source of mercury in fish and soils as well as smog-forming ozone and other pollutants in western US
Creating a market for efficient technologies and products (e.g., motors, appliances, and air conditioners) in China, making these technologies and products more cost-effective world-wide
Eliminating significant amounts of greenhouse gas emissions. Improved energy efficiency in China has been identified as the top global opportunity to curb energy growth and, in the process, cut CO2 emissions
